ImPerfect Handmade Upcycling
Laurie is the creative force behind ImPerfect Handmade Upcycling, a unique brand that reflects the passion for both sustainability and self-expression. With a personal journey shaped by ADHD, Laurie finds joy and focus in the repetitive, tactile process of sewing, transforming discarded fabrics into one-of-a-kind garments. Each piece created tells a story of imperfections, embraced, and given a new life, combining bold colors, textures, and design elements to showcase the beauty in things once considered "flawed." Laurie celebrates creativity, individuality, and the healing power of making something beautiful out of the old and overlooked. Now that I've introduced you to our newest artist, I'll let her explain a little more about herself below!
"Hello! I'm Laurie, and after almost 40 years of teaching children from ages 5-15, the struggle with my severe ADHD became more apparent in my retirement. Much like many of my students over the years, ADHD can be crippling. Trying to focus. Trying to get ANYTHING done! I was making my work-from-home husband a little crazy!
Being so schedule-driven as a teacher, retirement + ADHD (and not having to set an alarm at 4:30am) has proven to be an interesting adjustment. I needed something to do with my hands and my creative brain. Since retiring in November 2024, I have learned to channel my high-spirited energy into something beautiful.
Sewing has become a safe haven for me -- a vibrant espcae where I can quiet the noise and ignite my creativity. Often I sew into the wee hours of the morning when the world is quiet and my brain seems to be more focused. What you see in the pieces I make is a result of that creative focus and a one-of-a-kind pieces that demonstrates my own eclectic, often wacky style. Many of my items have been embellished with curtain valances, table runners, pillow shams, etc...somthing that is unexpected and interesting to me. Try to guess what each is made from when you see them!
My hope is that you find joy and a sense of uniqueness when you wear one of these unconventional items. I believe that clothing is an expression of self and personality. And althought there may have been a few swear words during the creative process, know that I have put love and heart intos its design and construction!
Thank you!"
